Public Art

Public art is often site-specific, meaning it is created in response to the place and community in which it resides.
It often interprets the history of the place, its people, and perhaps addresses a social or environmental issue.

Being public, the art is free and accessible to everyone. Public art creates a heightened awareness in the viewer of the site of the people and the broader context of what’s around them.

Anish Kapoor. “Cloud Gate”. 2004-2006. Stainless Steel. Chicago, USA
Picture
Tang Mun Kian. ”Cannon Hole”. 2009. Wire. Located at Lebuh Cannon, George Town, Malaysia
Picture
Chong Fah Cheong. “First Generation”. 2000. Bronze. Singapore
Picture
Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. “Spoonbridge and Cherry”.1998. Stainless steel. Minneapolis, USA.
If the people in the district of Saigon you lived in asked you to choose one of the above artworks to display in your neighborhood what one would you choose and why? Think about what the people would like, not just what you like.

I think I would choose Anish Kapoor. “Cloud Gate”. 2004-2006. Stainless Steel. Chicago, USA, because I think that it would be very unconventional and bring something new into the city, Saigon is already evolving into a very modern city so I think with this "in your face" sculpture would help

I would choose the 3rd sculpture Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. “Spoonbridge and Cherry”.1998. Stainless steel. Minneapolis, USA because I think this sculpture is interesting, because it looks different then other sculpture. It's very hard to make.

I would choose the 3rd sculpture with the kids fooling around.I think this sculpture is very interesting because the emotion of children are very clear and happy which makes the whole town happy. The addition of this sculpture will make the whole place bright.

I think I would choose Anish Kapoor. “Cloud Gate”. 2004-2006. Stainless Steel. Chicago, USA because if we place this in Saigon I think many people will be interesting and they can also have a look of them self in different shape too. This is something new and people in Saigon will appreciate that.

I like the fact that you said people could look at themselves in several different shapes. Interesting thought.

I live in a mediocre part of the city, it's rather dirty and crowded at certain times but other than that it's a nice district to live in. I would choose Chong Fah Cheong's "first generation", its colours and meaning would fit in more with the urban district i live in.

I think I would choose Tang Mun Kian's Cannon Hole because i think it'd relate more with the people here in Saigon. I think the people here in Saigon would like to look at something that has some value of history to them.

I think I would choose "Cannon Hole" by Tang Mun Kian. It's looks simple and very easy to understand what you can see. It must represent something about riding bike in the rain. It's something in the street wall.

I would choose the second one (cannon hole), because it contain an image of a cyclo which will easily catches people attention. I think it would catches people attention because a cyclo is one of the object that represent Viet Nam so it would be appropriate to display this in my neighborhood.

I would choose Chong Fah Cheong. “First Generation”. 2000. Bronze. Singapore. I think this artwork is really realistic with many interesting postures, I'm sure that everyone love creative things but still close to us.

I choose the first picture - Cloud Gate-Anish Kapoor. Looking at the picture, i feel like the whole city is in front of me. If it is put in SaiGon, there are so many people are attracted.

I would love to choose the second one which is the Cannon Hole to display in Saigon due to its reasonable size. The artwork bring the memoir of the past because it appearance look like bicycle or cyclo of the decade of 50's - 60's which very familiar with Vietnamese culture. Furthermore it can mounted on the wall as well so that I believe this artwork will suitable for the vast majority of Vietnamese people.
