Donald Judd. 'Untitled'. 1984. Concrete. Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas.
Donald Judd said, “If someone says his work is art, it’s art.”
Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

Write  2-3 complete sentences explaining your view.

If someone call it's art, it doesn't mean that it's art. For, example, if a student copy from another artwork into his/her artwork and someone doesn't know that and they call it's art. But when that person discover and knowledge is gained, the person would change their mind and conclude it's not art.
So, in my opinion, a piece of artwork is not always considered as art when another person says it's art. Our personal knowledge sometimes limited and affect on our judgement to say it's a piece of art. But it might not be.

I think that the work of that person could be called as art. I think that art doesn't need to be understood or accepted by the whole society. Art can come from the personal knowledge.

I agree with Donald Judd's statement. We all know that art before 19th century was really traditional and artists must observe the rules already given at that time. During before the 19th century, only people who could draw and observe the traditional rules very well were called artists. However, after the Dadaism period, people were very rebellious and they tended to break the laws. An example for this was the Mona Lisa portrait with a moustache on it. That is art because it's original and creative. I think that when a person set a work with a meaning or a certain purpose that requires deep understanding or knowledge, that work is considered as art.

Sometimes a piece of work made by a person and that person might not have the creativity and understanding to create that piece of work so they just copy and rearrange things. Other people said it's an artwork. Does that really a pierce of art?

Han - you make a good point, I think I agree more with Huy though in that if the person who created it says it is art...it can be called art. I agree though with your comment that it should not be a directly copied work, it can be appropriated though. Appropriated art is very controversial in today's art world, I tend to be more grey than black and white on the issue.

Marcel Duchamp and the Dada artists challenged the world to look at art in a new way by exhibiting work that others would not call "art". If an artist can defend or justify his/her art and process I believe it can be called art. I may not agree with the rationale, but I will accept the work as "art" based on the artist's ability to explain it.
